the tennis courts at byrd park come alive with starlings in the fall. tony and i used to live right over there and would walk the dogs up to watch them freak out at sunset. the sound of it is so amazing...thousands of wings beating the wind. they'd swirl and swirl until time to nest and then they'd swoop down in sets and vanish from sight into the bushes that used to line the on-ramp to the dowbtown expressway. the city thought they were a nuisance and had the bushes trimmed to stumps three years ago. and they cut down all of the old trees in shockoe bottom to deter nesting there, too. assholes. it was really an awesome sight. we'd gather up possees to go watch the starlings.

Wow! that sounds so cool. What a shame the city responded with such dickheadedness!
I lived in Austin Texas for a while and they have thousands of bats that live by the river. Everyone congregates on the river banks at dusk to watch the clouds of bats fly up and down above the river. I believe at first they tried to get rid of them but them realized they were an attraction and they eat bugs. So, they actually built bridges over the river that were perfect dwellings for the bats.
